Redeemer Valley Farm: From Tiny Garden to Community Sanctuary

November 10, 2025

From its humble beginnings as a small community garden, Redeemer Valley Farm has blossomed into a sanctuary and place of healing through careful cultivation and unwavering faith and hope. What started with a handful of dedicated volunteers has grown into a thriving community of more than 150 active and passionate volunteers tending to a two-acre garden and caring for over 90 animals, including chickens, goats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and pig.

For its first decade, the Farm’s growth was intentional and simple. The construction of the Weirman Family Barn and its opening in late 2023 marked a turning point, launching the Farm into its most significant period of expansion yet.

Over the past year, local and federal grants have enabled the Farm to dramatically expand its offerings. A Department of Human Services grant funded a 96-foot by 30-foot high tunnel (pictured above), providing year-round growing capability. These same funds supported the growth of the goat milk dairy, allowing the Farm to sell small quantities of fresh goat milk to the local community.

An Abington Township Community Development Block Grant funded the construction of an outdoor community kitchen, creating a beautiful and practical space for cooking demonstrations and educational events. This facility allows visitors to learn how to incorporate farm-fresh ingredients into nutritious meals.

After becoming an independent corporation separate from the Sisters, the Farm partnered with a consultant to strengthen its organizational development, strategic planning, and board cultivation. This collaboration resulted in an expanded Board of Directors:

  • Sr. Ellen Marvel, CSR – Board Chair
  • Lynn Mueller and Aaron Rubin – Co-Vice Chairs
  • Sr. Maryanne King, CSR – Secretary
  • Don Friel – Treasurer
  • Sr. Anita Bolton, CSR
  • Sr. Catherine Maguire, RSM
  • Sr. Julia Lanigan, GNSH

Among the board’s priorities was establishing a strong organizational structure for the Farm. Rachael Razzi was appointed the Farm’s inaugural Executive Director, while Sr. Ana Dura, CSR was appointed Farm Director.

To support the Farm’s expansion, Laura Henik joined the team in the newly-created role of Farm Educator and Volunteer Coordinator. Laura has transformed the Farm’s educational offerings, developing innovative programs like the beloved Farmyard Tales for young children and creating meaningful volunteer experiences that connect people with the land and animals.

“Tending to God’s Creation is an integral part of our Redeemer Charism, Spirituality and Mission,” said Sr. Ellen. “The Farm’s growth allows us to better serve the diverse needs of the local community while continuing to be a place of hope and healing.”

As Redeemer Valley Farm continues to thrive as a sanctuary for so many, all are invited and welcomed to experience this holy ground. The Farm stands as a testament to what can grow from small beginnings when nurtured with hope, healing, and community.
