According to Pope Francis, “the arts give expression to the beauty of the faith and proclaim the Gospel message of the grandeur of God’s creation.” Additionally, “architects and painters, sculptors and musicians, filmmakers and writers, photographers and poets, artists of every discipline are called to shine beauty, especially where darkness or gray dominates everyday life. “(Artists) are the custodians of beauty, heralds and witnesses of hope for humanity.”
Although many people may consider a frame shop to be a peculiar ministry for the Sisters, Sr. Linda does not see it that way. “As Sisters of the Redeemer, we are called by the Spirit of God to be a healing presence,” she said. “Art, whether an expertly-framed family heirloom, or an exquisite painting, or a product of an inquisitive child learning how to draw or paint—our work is a healing presence to others.”
“Like Pope Francis, we recognize and celebrate beauty, not only in God’s creation but through art and music—created by people using their God-given talents,” said Sr. Linda.
Sr. Linda opened Second to Nun Framery in 2010 after serving many years as a school teacher. However, Sr. Jacqueline Long planted the seed for a frame shop many years before.
Sr. Jacqueline began framing art as a retirement hobby in 1998. With the help of friend and volunteer Bob DeVore, a corner of the Provincialate basement became her framing workshop. Providentially, Sr. Jacqueline’s death in 2008 coincided with Sr. Linda’s search for a new ministry. With Bob’s guidance and training through the Professional Picture Framers Association, Sr. Linda opened Second to Nun Framery in the barn of the Sisters’ former farm on Huntingdon Pike.
Sr. Linda, along with Reena Brooks, masterfully frame works big and small. They also display beautiful artwork from local artists as well as other handmade goods. “There are so many wonderful artists in the area,” Sr. Linda said. “With many galleries closing over the years, there are fewer opportunities for artists to showcase their work. We want to support them and celebrate their God-given talent.”
All Second to Nun Framery proceeds support the Sisters’ ministries in Tanzania.
