Get to know Sr. Maryanne King

How were you first introduced to the Sisters of the Redeemer?

I was first introduced to the Sisters of the Redeemer while I was in high school (St. Hubert’s).  A friend of mine was a Redeemerette (volunteer at St. Joseph Manor) and heard about weekend retreats offered at the Provincialate.  A few of us from school went, and I just loved the Sisters and the experience.

What is your favorite movie?

The Sound of Music

What is your favorite food?

My favorite meal WAS spaghetti, until recently when I realized that I ate too many carbs.  Now I am leaning more toward seafood.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I love to read.  I also love to sing and play my guitar.

What is the best part of being a Sister of the Redeemer?

The best part about being a Sister is being associated with our founder, Blessed Alphonse Maria, and continuing her work of spreading the Gospel message to all with whom I come in contact.  I’m also pretty fond of all the Sisters.

What is the best advice you have ever given?

The best piece of advice I have ever given was when I told a friend that, in order to recognize God working in your life, you have to be looking for God in your life and open to God’s actions in your life.

What is your favorite scripture?

My favorite scripture is Psalm 27:1 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”  I believe this scripture with my whole heart and see it actively present in my life.

What advice would you give someone discerning religious life?

When you are discerning the religious life, prayer is the most important thing.  Talk to God, but more importantly, listen to God.  God will direct your path, but don’t be afraid if the path seems a little crooked at times.

What is your favorite season and why?

My favorite season is summer!!!!!!!  I have always loved the warm weather, but after living in Florida for 20 years, I am totally convinced that it is the best season of the year.  In Florida, I was just blessed to have it last all year.

What social justice issue is of most concern to you?

The social justice issue of most concern to me is abortion.  We are called to care for all people, especially the most vulnerable.  You can’t get any more vulnerable than a child in the womb.  There are so many arguments to try to justify abortion, but none of them convince me that it is right under any circumstances.
